However, in the penultimate month before the usual October top-ups for SASSA grants, news isn’t looking good. The Finance Minister’s Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) address is only scheduled for Wednesday 21 October 2026. This is well after the scheduled payment run in the first week of the month, when top-ups would usually occur.

If you’ll recall, South African Social Security Agency increases for Older Person Grants were hiked by R80 back in April 2026. But there is no confirmation this will increase again this year:

  • SASSA Old-Age Grants 60 to 74 years old – R2 400 (up from R2 320)
  • SASSA Old-Age Grants 75 years and older – R2 420 (up from R2 340)

Needy beneficiaries can only hope the new SASSA minister, Dina Pule, can argue their case with the National Treasury in the coming month …

Nevertheless, SASSA Older Person Grants for September 2026 will forge ahead at the same rate as before. Even though the agency’s strict review and eLife certification policies have been drawing widespread criticism. Civil society groups argue that the hundreds of millions they save through reviews is but a drop in the ocean versus the department’s underspending on social grants.

Reportedly, there is a massive R4.8-billion shortfall for the financial year (2025/26). Split across four-million Older Person Grants, that money could yield a R100-increase per month for a full year with no extra budget required. For those who are reviewed by SASSA and clear their names, they receive a deferred payment on a fourth payment date. Next month this falls on Monday 7 September 2026.

And don’t forget that the agency has quietly increased the income (means) and asset eligibility for SASSA Older Person Grants for September 2026:

  • Your income must be less than R9 350 (single) or R18 700 (married) per month.
  • This adds up to R112 200 (single) or R224 400 (married) per year.
  • Total assets (property) in your name cannot be worth more than R1 584 000 (single) or R3 168 000 (married).
WHAT TO BRING TO YOUR APPLICATION APPOINTMENT
  • Official RSA identity document (ID) preferably a Smart ID Card with digital ID photo.
  • Valid three months’ statement certified by your bank, plus copies.
  • All documents proving your marital status, plus death certificates if necessary.
  • Proof of residence (a utility bill with your name on it, not older than three months).
  • Documents proving your income and/or financial dividends (very important).
  • Comprehensive information regarding assets/valuation of any property you own.
  • Full declaration of any and all private pension in your name.
  • Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) membership book, or discharge certificate from your previous job.
  • A copy of your will, first and final liquidation and distribution accounts if your spouse has passed away in the last five years.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO BE APPROVED?

SASSA Older Person Grants for September 2026 typically take around three months to be processed. So, if you apply today, you will receive your first payment around about December 2026. However, the good news is you will be back paid to the date of your first application, a first tranche of three months. But that’s assuming you have all your above documents correct at the first time of asking.
