Liverpool and Chelsea remain interested in Alessandro Bastoni after intermediaries indicated that the Inter Milan defender would consider a move to England, according to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey. Barcelona is also in the picture following its pursuit of the Italy international over the summer.
Bastoni favored Barcelona when discussions were progressing, but has not ruled out the Premier League. Liverpool is assessing options for 2027 as it considers the longer-term shape of its defense beyond Virgil van Dijk.
Chelsea’s interest is linked to the back three being used by Xabi Alonso. That setup would offer Bastoni a familiar defensive structure, although neither English club has a reported agreement with Inter or the player.
Inter previously valued Bastoni at around £70 million, Bailey reports. That is a reference point from earlier discussions, with no new offer or revised asking price disclosed.
The Italian club signed Bastoni to a contract through June 2028, leaving it with time to consider his future. A decision next summer would come with a year remaining on that agreement, making any progress toward an extension relevant to interested clubs.
Bastoni’s contribution on the ball is part of his appeal. Inter’s review of his development highlighted six assists in 2022-23, including the cross for Nicolò Barella against Benfica in the Champions League quarterfinals. He was also selected in UEFA’s team of the season after helping Inter reach the final.
That passing range could give an English side another route through pressure when building from defense. For Chelsea, the left side of a back three would provide a natural position to assess. Liverpool would have to weigh the same qualities against the responsibilities of its own defensive setup.
