The Cat Distribution System doesn't care how many pets you already have. When it decides you need another feline in your life, it has no problem arranging a surprise delivery five feet down your neighbor's window well.

One man was letting his dogs outside when he heard tiny cries coming from his neighbor's house. After investigating, he discovered a frightened kitten trapped in a window well. He climbed down to rescue him, brought him inside, and watched as the little guy went from hissing and bluff-biting to cuddling, falling asleep in his arms, and even purring.

The kitten, now named Ulysses, arrived during an especially difficult time. His rescuer had lost both of his parents, his grandmother, and his uncle within a relatively short period. His mom had always loved cats, and with the anniversary of her passing approaching, he couldn't help wondering whether she'd somehow sent Ulysses his way.

Animals have a way of making difficult days feel a little less lonely. They don't know what we're going through, and they certainly can't fix everything that's bothering us, but sometimes their company is exactly what we want. A cat curling up beside us on the couch or greeting us at the door can give us a small moment of happiness when there hasn't been much to smile about.

We've spent enough time around animals to appreciate how much comfort can come from the simplest interactions. Sitting with a purring cat, playing with an energetic kitten, or having a furry companion follow us from room to room can give us something pleasant to focus on. Even the responsibility of caring for a pet can bring little moments to look forward to throughout the day.

For people who grew up with animals, welcoming a new pet can also bring back memories of the people they shared those experiences with. Ulysses' rescuer remembers how much his mom adored cats, and now he has a tiny feline who reminds him of that part of his childhood.

Ulysses still needs to meet the family's two cats and two dogs, so his forever home isn't guaranteed just yet. But regardless of what happens next, he's already brought some happiness into his rescuer's life.

We can't know whether his mom had anything to do with this unexpected delivery, but we can understand why he'd like to believe she did. After everything he's been through, we're glad this little kitten gave him something to smile about again.
