James Gunn has explained his preference for digital cameras over film. The director recently addressed the topic while discussing his filmmaking process. His comments come as he prepares the upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow.
A fan asked Gunn on Threads if there was a particular reason he leans toward digital. The question came after Matt Reeves discussed his preference for digital filmmaking and the film-out process. Gunn replied, “Simply because you can’t have 35 or 70 mm cameras small enough to move the cameras like I do.”
The co-CEO of DC Studios’ answer highlights how important camera movement is in his filmmaking style. Digital cameras can offer a smaller and more flexible setup than traditional 35mm or 70mm cameras. This allows a director to position the camera more freely during demanding sequences.
The approach can be particularly useful for Gunn’s superhero projects. His films often feature fast-paced action, large sets, visual effects, and energetic camera work. The setup gives Gunn more freedom when staging those sequences.

Milly Alcock will reprise her role as Supergirl after appearing in Superman. Aaron Pierre will also appear as John Stewart, following his role in DC’s Lanterns. Adria Arjona has joined the film as Maxima, while Matthew Lillard is also part of the cast in an undisclosed role.
With principal photography now complete, Man of Tomorrow is moving into post-production. Gunn will oversee the project as both writer and director.
Man of Tomorrow will arrive in theaters on July 9, 2027.
