While Manchester United might have opened up the 2026/27 campaign in the midst of a real rut, Michael Carrick’s position in the Old Trafford dugout remains undisputed, according a report from The Athletic.
Although the ex-Middlesbrough boss might have only made a shock return to the red half of Manchester back in January, Carrick helped guide United to a bronze medal finish and a lucrative Champions League return.
Making an immediate impact following his surprise return, United’s former midfielder put pen to paper on a two-year deal that will run through until the summer of 2028 back in May.
However, despite heading into the summer break riding a serious wave of momentum, Carrick’s men have struggled to find a similar level this time around.
Suffering an infamous collapse at Old Trafford on Wednesday night as they watched their EFL Cup adventure come to an abrupt end following a 3-2 defeat against Brighton, it had been speculated that Carrick found some mounting pressure on his shoulders.
However, although the Premier League giants might have gained an unwanted reputation for their defensive struggles, The Athletic are reporting that the Old Trafford hierarchy have handed Carrick their complete backing.
Coming under a huge amount of scrutiny last weekend as they slumped to a 1-0 loss in the Manchester derby, United have now registered just one win from their previous five appearances across all competitions.
Carrick’s downbeat squad will be next seen on Sunday afternoon when they travel to a Fulham side who currently find themselves sat in the drop zone.
