Matthew Macfadyen and Charlie Hunnam are entering the world of Cold War espionage in a new eight-part thriller. The series brings together the Succession star and Sons of Anarchy actor for a story of secret operations, divided loyalties, and dangerous missions.
BBC and MGM+ have released the first look at Legacy of Spies as filming wraps on the highly anticipated series. Macfadyen plays legendary spymaster George Smiley, while Hunnam stars as experienced field operative Alec Leamas. The series is adapted from John le Carré’s 1963 novel The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and draws on material from his 2017 novel A Legacy of Spies.

The story follows Leamas as he recruits Doris Quinz (Devrim Lingnau Islamoğlu), a young East German woman, for a dangerous mission. She helps him smuggle high-value Stasi documents into the West. The operation soon triggers a major conflict in Cold War Berlin.
Daniel Brühl stars as Josef Fiedler, while Felix Kammerer plays Hans-Dieter Mundt. The two Stasi operatives attempt to uncover the source of the intelligence leak while competing with each other.
Agnes O’Casey plays Liz Gold, an idealistic young woman who becomes involved with Leamas. Her connection with him further complicates his dangerous mission. Leamas must navigate his relationship with Liz while dealing with the demands of his work.
Macfadyen’s George Smiley works behind the scenes to orchestrate the operation. Meanwhile, Soviet mastermind Karla remains a threat to the mission. The story explores the personal cost of espionage as the characters face difficult choices between duty, loyalty, and love.
The cast also features Dan Stevens as Bill Haydon, Jake Dunn as Peter Guillam, Anjana Vasan as Connie Sachs, Charlotte Ritchie as Ann Smiley, Joe Alwyn as Jim Prideaux, and Hugh Laurie as Control.
The Ink Factory is producing the series in co-production with Amusement Park Film and in association with 127 Wall Productions and Paramount Television Studios. Stephen Cornwell serves as showrunner, while Michael Lennox is the lead director. The production took place mainly in the Czech Republic, with additional locations in the UK and Germany.
Legacy of Spies will premiere on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK. MGM+ will release it in the United States and several international markets, with additional broadcasts planned through SBS, Sky, and CANAL+.
