Sometimes you try to do something nice for someone you really care about, thinking it's going to help them in a tricky situation. However, what might have seemed like a great surprise at first turns out to be an inconvenience for the person in question. In reality, it doesn't matter how good our intentions are if we fail to actually listen to the person's needs and requests. Actually, sometimes the best thing we can do for others is to get out of the way and let them be.
This can be especially true for parents and children. Parents are used to helping us with everything as we grow up. They give us advice, handle our schedules, and make sure to know everything about what's going on in our lives, so they can keep us safe. Nonetheless, as we grow up, we have to detach ourselves from their control and protection in order to go into the world as independent individuals. Easier said than done. For parents, it can be incredibly hard to change their years-long routine and start seeing their kids as adults.
That's exactly what is happening in the story below. A young person decided to buy their grandad's old house when he passed. They got a loan approved, and the decision seemed to be supported by everyone in the family. So much so that their parents decided to join in on the fun and started doing renovations. At first, it was supposed to be a team effort, but later, their parents thought it would be a great surprise to renovate the house without the new owner's knowledge.
When the homeowner found out, they were not pleased. While they appreciated their parents' effort, they felt frustrated that it wasn't run by them first, considering that the house had a new owner. When the conflict was later revealed to the rest of the family, opinions were divided. Some argue that the homeowner is being selfish and ungrateful for not noticing that their parents just saved tons of money by doing renovations for free. Others agree that there should have been a discussion before said renovations actually happened. We think, sometimes, not doing anything is the best thing you can do for someone else. In this case, let the new owner enjoy the purchase, make decisions on their own, and wait until they ask for help when needed.
What would you have done as the owner of the house?
