The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has announced plans to deploy between 50 and 70 smart, self-service filling stations across the country within the next six months.
Executive Vice President, Downstream, Mumuni Dagazau, disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja during the commissioning of a technology-driven service station along Bill Clinton Drive, Airport Road.
The facility, equipped with electric vehicle charging points, marks the first of several “energy hubs” to be introduced nationwide.
Dagazau explained that the initiative aims to transform conventional petrol stations into modern energy and mobility centres offering multiple services, including petrol, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), compressed natural gas (CNG), and EV charging.
“This is the first of many smart stations we are going to have around the country. We are hoping to roll out about 50 to 70 of these types of stations within the next six months,” he said.
The new model allows customers to dispense fuel themselves via digital payment systems, while attendants remain available to assist.
Dagazau dismissed fears of job losses, stressing that the expanded services would create more employment opportunities.
Executive Director, Retail Operations and Mobility, Shettima Baba-Kukawa, said the Abuja station has a storage capacity of 180,000 litres of petrol and 45,000 litres of diesel, with 16 petrol pumps, two diesel pumps, and six EV charging points powered entirely by solar energy.
The outlet will also feature a quick-service restaurant, coffee shop, automated car wash, service bay, and LPG facilities, with plans to add CNG and a vehicle conversion centre.
Managing Director of NNPC Retail, Huub Stokman, noted that the transformation was necessary as deregulation and the Dangote Refinery reshape Nigeria’s downstream market.
He said consumers now demand faster services, digital payments, and sustainable energy options.
The initiative reflects NNPC’s broader strategy to modernise its retail network, combining conventional fuel sales with cleaner energy and customer-focused services.
