Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon has commented on the WNBA playoff format recently and suggested that the current system means that the higher seeds have no advantage in the first round.
The Aces are currently third in the league with a record of 29-13, having two games left to play.
In turn, they are likely going to be one of the higher seeds in the 2026 playoffs, but Hammon isn’t happy with the 1-1-1 format.
Becky Hammon not happy with WNBA first-round playoff formatSpeaking in a video shared by the Aces YouTube channel, Hammon stated that instead of it being 1-1-1, the format should be 2-1, or instead have the teams face off in a five-game series in the first round.
The Aces coach admitted she does not like the setup, but mentioned that it’s not her decision to make.
Hammon said: “The 1-1-1, I don’t think, is a good setup. It is what it is.
“It should be 2-1 or go to a five-game series because the 1-1-1 is no advantage for the higher seed, really. It’s nothing. That’s not my decision obviously, but I don’t like the setup in that first round.”
At present, the Aces are due to take on sixth-place Washington Mystics in the first round of the playoffs.
The Mystics were most recently in action against the Indiana Fever and picked up a 93-77 win.
