A new update on Marvel Studios’ Nova project hints at a possible connection to a major Avengers movie. The narrative link comes from an event involving the Nova Corps in Avengers: Infinity War.

Screenwriter Michael Waldron, who is currently developing the project, recently spoke with TheWrap about bringing Richard Rider into the live-action fold. When asked about expanding the cosmic side of the MCU, Waldron shared his enthusiasm for the character. “I don’t know if I can say anything about anything I’m doing with Marvel. But I will say, I love Nova. I love Rich Rider. However we expand the cosmic side of the MCU will be really cool.”

The discussion then turned to the Nova Corps’ destruction in Avengers: Infinity War and whether a Nova story would have to address it. He said, “They would have to reckon with that. Yeah.”

Waldron did not reveal how the Nova Corps’ fate would factor into the movie. He also did not provide specific plot details about the project.

Nova and Richard Rider have a long history in Marvel Comics

Richard Rider is the original Marvel character known as Nova. He first appeared in 1976, when he was granted the powers of a Nova Centurion and became responsible for protecting Earth.

His biggest cosmic storyline came with Annihilation. Annihilus launched the Annihilation Wave, which devastated the Xandarian Nova Corps. Richard was the sole surviving member and continued as Nova after the event.

That history gives Marvel several possible starting points for the movie. The character has stories rooted on Earth, as well as adventures involving the Nova Corps and the wider universe.

While Marvel Studios has yet to announce casting or an official release date, Waldron’s comments confirm that Nova’s long-awaited debut will directly address the fallout of the Infinity Saga and the MCU’s expanded cosmic slate.
