If our favorite manicurists’ Instagram feeds are anything to go by, the “clean girl” manicure is officially on its way out. Taking its place? “Nuance nails”.
If, like us, you’ve been enamored with sheer pinks and barely-there nails (think OPI Bubble Bath and Essie Ballet Slippers), this is your sign to mix it up a little. Dreamed up by Japanese and Korean nail artists alike, this manicure trend is multifaceted. Think mismatched details, realistic marbling, color gradients, and nail art that mimics all manner of precious stones, from amethyst to emeralds.
What is the nuance nail trend?Nail artist Emily Brady at Melting Mango Salon tells Refinery29 that this type of manicure looks best on a layered, translucent base — but anything goes. The beauty of the “nuance nail” manicure is that it doesn’t need to be perfect, and each nail can be totally different depending on your mood.
Instead of being tidy and identical, this manicure is certainly more cool-girl approved, hints Brady. “Nuance nails are a step up from the clean girl aesthetic,” she says. “They can still stay super neutral [if you want], but have something that adds a little sparkle to a ‘soap nail’ manicure.” She adds that there are quite a few layers, textures, and blending involved. For those who are still attached to the “clean nail” life, Brady thinks this is a more intricate alternative. “It allows [you] to elevate [your] everyday manicure without being too loud,” she explains.
With that in mind, here’s all the inspiration you need.
