Sundowns announced the move putting an end to the growing speculation surrounding the experienced right-back.

“Mamelodi Sundowns are delighted to announce the signing of Deano van Rooyen, who joins us on a multi-year deal!” the club said.

The confirmation comes after SoccerBeat reported that the move was already a done deal.

Van Rooyen’s arrival comes at an important time for head coach Miguel Cardoso, with Khuliso Mudau and Zuko Mdunyelwa both sidelined by injuries.

That left Sundowns with Thapelo Morena as the only recognised senior option at right-back.

The arrival of Van Rooyen therefore gives Cardoso much-needed depth as the Brazilians continue to compete on multiple fronts. The move to Chloorkop comes just weeks after Van Rooyen mutually terminated his contract with Orlando Pirates.

The defender had established himself as a dependable member of the Buccaneers squad after joining from Stellenbosch FC.

His departure from Pirates opened the door for Sundowns to move quickly and secure the experienced full-back.

Van Rooyen, affectionately known as “Die Hond” because of his relentless and never-say-die work ethic, now begins a new chapter with the African champions.

For Mamelodi Sundowns, the signing provides valuable depth at a critical stage of the season.

Van Rooyen brings top-flight experience, pace and tactical discipline. His versatility also gives Cardoso another option for both domestic and continental assignments.

The Brazilians are juggling a demanding schedule as they look to defend their CAF Champions League crown while competing across several fronts.

Born in Stellenbosch on 24 November 1996, Van Rooyen started his football journey alongside his cousin and fellow professional Ashley Du Preez.

The pair joined Stellenbosch FC as teenagers, with Van Rooyen making his senior debut in 2016 at the age of 19 against Mthatha Bucks in the National First Division.

He became a key figure as Stellenbosch FC earned promotion to the Premiership in 2019. Van Rooyen eventually left the club as their all-time appearance record holder, having made more than 160 appearances.

His time in Stellenbosch ended with silverware after he co-captained Stellenbosch FC to the 2023 Carling Knockout Cup.

Now, the defender gets another opportunity to add more major honours to his career.

This time, Van Rooyen will do it in the famous yellow and blue of Sundowns.
