A smash-hit horror flick from earlier this year is now on HBO Max. It isn’t Obsession, but A24’s first movie to surpass $200 million globally. The movie became the studio’s highest-grossing release ever.

Backrooms has debuted on the streamer today, September 25, 2026. The flick features a star-studded cast, involving Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell.

Backrooms’ official logline reads, “A strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom, leading to an endless network of interconnected rooms where time bends and the only thing scarier than getting lost is the sense that something is lying in wait.”

Will Soodik wrote the A24 film, and it was produced by James Wan, Michael Clear, Roberto Patino, Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, Dan Levine, Osgood Perkins, Chris Ferguson, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and Kori Adelson. The executive producers include Kane Parsons, Jesse Savath, Judson Scott, and Chris White.

How A24’s record-breaking hit became the studio’s biggest movie yet

The microbudget horror film became A24’s highest-grossing movie ever after crossing $400 million globally at the worldwide box office. The movie was driven by viral internet fame and strong Gen Z turnout, despite being directed by the 20-year-old YouTuber Kane Parsons.

Produced for just $10 million, the film adapts Parsons’ viral web series centered on liminal spaces. The plot essentially follows a furniture store operator who uncovers a sprawling maze of liminal rooms hidden beneath the store’s basement.

Per HypeBeast, Backrooms marks a historic milestone for A24 as it became the studio’s highest-grossing movie of all time after surpassing Marty Supreme ($192 million). The movie also delivered the studio’s largest opening weekend ever with an $81 million USD domestic launch, making Parsons the youngest director in box office history to debut a film at No. 1.
