Peter Obi has accused the former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of working against his interests during the 2023 presidential election, despite repeatedly assuring Nigerians and the international community that the election would be free and credible.
Obi, who is now the presidential candidate of the NDC for the 2027 election, said Nigerians made the mistake of placing too much trust in the promises made by electoral officials ahead of the 2023 poll.
According to him, the former INEC chairman traveled extensively before the election, assuring the international community that the commission was fully prepared to deliver a transparent and credible process. Obi, however, alleged that his actions during the election told a completely different story.
Speaking about the lessons from 2023, Obi urged Nigerians not to depend solely on assurances from electoral officials during the next election.
Instead, he called on citizens to remain actively involved and vigilant throughout the entire electoral process — from voting to the counting and collation of results.
When asked whether he had evidence to support his allegation against the former INEC chairman, Obi said he did. However, he did not disclose the specific evidence during the discussion.
He insisted that the events surrounding the 2023 election are known to everyone, including the former INEC chairman himself.
Despite this, Obi said he had no interest in meeting with the former electoral commission boss to discuss what happened, stressing that he had moved on from that chapter.
The former Anambra State governor also repeated his position that he won the 2023 presidential election, even though INEC officially declared him the third-place candidate.
When questioned about how he could maintain that position given the significant difference between his votes and those recorded for the declared winner, Obi said the size of the margin was not the issue.
He argued that the people who conducted the election know what happened and are aware that the process was not properly handled.
Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar both challenged the outcome of the 2023 presidential election in court, but their legal challenges were ultimately unsuccessful.
