Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Elite golfers will compete in a two-week match play competition to cap the PGA Tour Championship Series starting in 2028, officials announced Tuesday.
The PGA Tour announced in June that it would revamp its playoff system with a new competitive structure, which includes the Championship Series and PGA Tour Challenger Series.
"From the beginning, the goal of the future competition committee was to create an easier-to-follow competitive model for our fans with greater consequence and a stronger season-long narrative," PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp said in a news release.
"Throughout this process, we listened carefully to our fans, players and partners. One message came through clearly: the culmination of our season should be worthy of the journey it takes to get there."
Participants in the Championship Series will compete in 72-hole tournaments and be measured through a season-long points system. The season, which will run from February to August, will feature about two dozen events, including the Players Championship, majors and international team events.

File Photo by John Angelillo/UPIThe Top 90 players will then compete in a Championship Series finale -- a 72-hole, stroke-play tournament. That will determine the season-long points winner.
The first week of the revamped Tour Championship will feature the Top 32 players from the season-long standings, split between eight groups of four players, competing for three days in group match play.

The Top 2 players from each group will advance to the second week of the Tour Championship.
The 16 players who advance will compete in head-to-head match play at a different venue than the previous week. They will advance through a bracket based on their win-loss records, with the final two undefeated players meeting in a final-day showdown for the title.
The PGA Tour will announce dates and venues for the 2028 Championship Series on Feb. 22. Eligibility for the series will be announced after a Sept. 14 board meeting.
A minimum of 20 players from the PGA Tour Challenger Series will be promoted to the PGA Tour Championship Series in 2029. At least 90 of the 130 PGA Tour Championship players will be fully exempt for the next season, while those who fail to retain membership risk relegation to the Challenger Series.
Challenger Series players who win more than one event in the same season -- or a major title -- will receive immediate promotion.
The 2026 edition of the current FedEx Cup Playoff system -- which features three tournaments -- will conclude with the 2026 Tour Championship. That competition will be held from Thursday through Sunday at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.
