For decades, General Motors was the world’s biggest automaker. Millions upon millions of vehicles sold around the world. However, times changed and once we hit the 1990s, GM had competition and, wrestling with Toyota. Moving forward, Volkswagen jumped into the fray and GM fell by the wayside.


Now-struggling Nissan took a whack being the top dog, fighting for leadership with Toyota, but it too couldn’t keep the pace and Toyota led the pack again. However, there is a new contender on the horizon: Hyundai. 

The South Korean automaker’s grown rapidly in recent years, adding SUVs and expanding its electric and hybrid lineup of vehicles around the world. Once considered a throwaway, cheap brand, if Hyundai takes the global sales lead, what does it say about the company? Is it the best automaker? Is it a fluke?
