ENT doctors use nasal speculums to look inside a patient's nose. Typically the tool is held in one hand and a flashlight in the other. Belgian industrial design firm Raak Design streamlined this approach with their new speculum design for client VisionTech.
They've managed to snake a tube up the inside of the handle with an LED at the end, providing light right where the doctor needs it.
The electronic component is hidden in the handle, and was designed to be removable for autoclaving (sterilization) of the tool.
Mechanically speaking, "The spring mechanism is fully enclosed within the sculpted handle," the firm writes, "creating a precise grip and a calmer, more approachable appearance for both clinicians and patients.
"The result is a refined medical tool that improves visibility, simplifies the examination workflow, and is engineered for dependable everyday clinical use."
