Described by police as a “cowardly” intimidation attempt, over a dozen masked men marched through Kamloops, B.C., as part of a white nationalist demonstration on Sunday.

The demonstration, which also saw masked men gather on the nearby Tk’emlups te Secwepemc reserve, happened just days before the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 30.

Video posted online showed the men, dressed in black, carrying flags and wearing white gaiters over their faces, standing in formation in a parking lot near the reserve’s former residential school building early Sunday morning.

RCMP investigating

The same group was also responsible for unfurling a banner over a Kamloops overpass containing the words “Got Bones?”

The banner is in reference to the May 2021 announcement of over 200 possible burial sites of human remains near the f ormer Kamloops Indian Residential School, although no excavations have taken place at the site to confirm.

The gathering attracted the attention of Kamloops RCMP, who have opened an investigation.

“The posting of a banner bearing the words ‘got bones’ combined with the use of masks to conceal their identities while making such public statements is a cowardly attempt to avoid accountability for actions and messages that are clearly intended to intimidate, provoke fear and division,” said Kamloops RCMP Supt. Jeff Pelley in a statement sent to local media.

He said the group dispersed when approached by RCMP members.

United response from local officials

In a statement, Tk’emlups te Secwepemc Chief Rosanne Casimir alleged the group behind the protest was Second Sons Canada — a self-described “Canadian men’s nationalist club.”

Indeed, flags carried by the marchers did carry logos and crests used by the group.

The Toronto Sun reached out to Second Sons Canada for comment.

“The presence of individuals associated with white supremacist and white nationalist activity in our community is deeply concerning and is being taken seriously by Chief and Council,” Casimir said in her statement.

“We recognize the fear, anger, and concern this may create for our members, Survivors, families, and staff. We hear those concerns, and we are taking action.”

Prime Minister Mark Carney took to social media to express his concern.

“The cowardly act that took place at Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc yesterday, is abhorrent,” Carney said in a Facebook post .

“It has no place in this country. My thoughts are with everyone who are shaken and hurt by this disgusting display of hate.”

Kamloops-Thompson-Nicola MP and Tory Public Safety Critic Frank Caputo offered his support to Tk’emlúps leadership on X.

“Screw off. Go home. Never come back. Reflect on your poor decisions,” he wrote.
