Rebecca Hall is ready for ‘all the weirdos’ after her wild Onslaught role

Rebecca Hall shared her “aha moment” for playing Hanna Kammler in Adam Wingard’s upcoming A24 sci-fi action film Onslaught. Hall plays Dan Stevens’ dominatrix handler in the film. She admitted that Wingard’s pitch alone was enough to convince her. “He had me at ‘do you want to play Dan’s dominatrix handler?’ I was like, ‘Yes,'” Hall told Collider.

Hall also credited her close working relationship with Wingard for her eagerness to take on the role. “I’d do anything for Adam, honestly, at this point,” she said. “It’s pretty much like it’s always going to be a good time, and he allows me to do kind of crazy stuff now,” Hall added. Hall previously starred as Dr. Ilene Andrews in Wingard’s MonsterVerse films Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024).

The actress now embraces eccentric characters after spending years in a more grounded role. “For a long time we were in Ilene Andrews’ world, but now it’s like fun,” Hall explained. “There is no going back now; give me all the weirdos, I’m so ready,” she added.

A conversation about accents helped Hall find Hanna Kammler’s voice. Wingard referenced Marlene Dietrich’s unique speaking style as inspiration. “You know how Marlene Dietrich doesn’t sound German, but she’s German; there are Americanisms, and it’s totally weird and idiosyncratic and not textbook German,” Hall recalled him saying. She immediately recognized that observation as a key to unlocking her character. “I was like, ‘That’s something,'” she added.

Hall pinpoints one specific on-set moment that made everything click. She was chopping carrots for a breakfast scene on her first day of filming. “There was just something so weird about chopping carrots for breakfast,” Hall said. “I don’t know, it all made sense,” she concluded.

Adria Arjona, Drew Starkey, among others, are also part of Onslaught, which hits theaters on September 4, 2026.
