It’s a quiet roundup of young adult book news during what is likely a quiet week around the United States and Canada. With Labor Day this weekend, things are transitioning. We’ll move from a quieter summer season in the world of books to a busy, active fall season.

I don’t want to stop sharing them–there are so few places doing YA book news roundups anymore, and they’re especially useful for folks who like keeping tabs on news about adaptations or new books from beloved authors–but these news roundups may be integrated elsewhere in regular YA book talk.

Adaptation News

  • Season two of Finding Her Edge is currently being filmed.
  • Gayle Forman’s Just One Day was optioned by Amazon quite a while ago, but it sounds like the option expired. It’s been picked up now by Hulu, though the team who was working on it will continue working on it.
  • There’s been a lot of coverage about the rifts between Tomi Adeyemi and the team behind the adaptation of her book The Children of Blood and Bone. You can catch up on the story at Vanity Fair, as well as this thoughtful piece at Bloomberg about how the adaptation deserves more than “social media speculation.”
  • Although The Dallergut Dream Department Store, a Korean bestselling fantasy book, is not YA, the news about its adaptation deserves a spot here. Why? One of the people behind the adaptation is none other than YA author Patrick Ness.
  • Why and how My Life With the Walter Boys became a unicorn YA hit for Netflix.
  • We’re getting a sequel to the adaptation of Clown in a Cornfield. This one’s still on my to-watch list, and I think it’ll be bumped up this horror season.
  • The Tony Award winning Broadway show SUFFS is getting a YA adaptation.
  • The director of Sunrise on the Reaping talks about some of the scenes he had to adjust or leave out from the novel in order to attain a PG-13 rating.

Book Previews

  • Quill & Quire highlights YA books, both fiction and nonfiction, in their fall preview. This one centers Canadian writers.
  • Here are all of the science fiction and fantasy YA books that hit shelves in August.
  • Holly Black is expanding her Folk of the Air series. Get excited for new books, merch, and more.
  • Pulling back the curtain on the new Barbie young adult book, written by Alex Aster.

Awards News

  • Here are the finalists for the Kirkus Prize, including some of the YA books in the youth literature category.
  • Read your way into the finalists for 2026 Canadian Children’s Book Centre Awards. This is a great way to expand your reading outside of exclusively American-published titles. Many are available in the U.S., but some are going to be much more Canadian.
  • This year’s Lodestar Award for Best Young Adult Book goes to a fantastic cozy fantasy, Coffeeshop in an Alternate Universe by C.B. Lee.

Miscellaneous

  • YA authors Natasha Díaz and Máire Roche talk about remixing the classics for teen readers. Both have recent books that provide a twist to a well-known story.
  • Remember the teen scream Nickelodeon show Are You Afraid of the Dark? Do you remember the books that existed from that series? I didn’t, and I loved this nostalgic romp.
