X-Men ’97 reportedly made the right call in permanently killing off a character, much to the disappointment of the fans. The show’s producer has recently shed light on the decision, explaining why it was a necessity.
Eric Lewald, the executive producer of X-Men ’97, confirmed that Nightcrawler’s death in the Season 2 finale is permanent. Kurt Wagner died in the episode “Survival of the Fittest” after Rogue made a deal with Celestial Eson the Searcher to save Gambit from Apocalypse’s control. As Rogue’s life was on the line, Wagner made a separate deal with Eson, sacrificing himself to rescue his sister. Viewers have since hoped that the show might revive the character, given its massive popularity in the fandom.
When The Direct asked Lewald at MultiCon if Nightcrawler’s death would be permanent, he confirmed, “Oh yeah!”
Fellow executive producer and Lewald’s wife Julia further added, “The finale of Season 2 is very emotional, and it’s earned. It is earned because those are the characters that we’ve all spent 30 years marinating in, and thinking of and loving.”
Lewald went on to credit the show’s head writer for Season 3, Matthew Chauncey, for the fateful twist of the Season 2 finale. He stated, “And because of the personal relationships among the ones that are in jeopardy, and the one that ends up having to pay the price, it just fits. It fits, and again, we can’t take credit for that story twist. The guys, you know, Matt Chauncey and the people doing the writing made that choice, but we think it’s a perfect choice.”

X-Men ’97 Season 2 aired its final episode on August 12, 2026. A third and fourth season are already in development.
