A pivotal piece of West Coast rap history will play a major role in Universal Pictures’ upcoming Snoop Dogg biopic. The story will revisit the era when Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur shared the Death Row Records orbit, collaborated on music, and eventually found themselves caught in the tensions dividing hip-hop.
Camron Jones joins Snoop Dogg biopic as Tupac ShakurCamron Jones, known for Amazon Prime Video’s Panic, will portray Shakur in Snoop, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Craig Brewer directs the project, while Brian Grazer, Allan Mandelbaum, Snoop Dogg, and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker produce. Michael Beugg and Jeb Brody serve as executive producers.
Jonathan Daviss, known for Outer Banks, plays Snoop Dogg. The growing cast also includes Myles Bullock as Dr. Dre and Lauren London as Snoop Dogg’s mother. Brewer wrote the latest draft of the screenplay after Joe Robert Cole started the script, and the production plans to use songs from the ace rapper’s extensive catalog.
Shakur’s presence brings one of rap’s most complicated chapters into the story. The New York-born artist became a defining voice of 1990s hip-hop through songs such as California Love, Changes, Dear Mama, Hail Mary, and 2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted. He also crossed into acting, appearing in Poetic Justice and Gridlock’d, while legal troubles led to prison time during his short but explosive career.
His connection with Snoop Dogg ran through Death Row Records, where both artists recorded during the label’s dominant West Coast period. Their partnership produced 2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted, but the relationship later fractured. Tupac wanted Snoop Dogg to take a stronger stance in the escalating East Coast-West Coast feud, which created tension between the two rappers.
Shakur’s life ended violently in September 1996. After attending a Mike Tyson boxing match in Las Vegas, he rode in a BMW with Death Row co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight when another vehicle pulled alongside them. A gunman opened fire, striking Shakur several times. He died six days later at age 25.
