Star Wars just handed its most sacred story to a familiar Marvel name. Lucasfilm has reportedly picked a Spider-Man filmmaker to lead the next chapter of the Skywalker Saga, and a fan-favourite character could be coming back.

Jon Watts confirmed as the director of Star Wars’ next Skywalker Saga movie

Deadline has confirmed that Lucasfilm tapped Jon Watts to direct the first film in a new Skywalker Saga trilogy. Knight Edge Media first reported the news of Watts’ involvement. Simon Kinberg is writing the trilogy, which returns Star Wars to the Skywalker family after eight years.

Watts co-created the Star Wars streaming series Skeleton Crew. Before that, he directed three Spider-Man films: Homecoming, Far From Home and No Way Home. Meanwhile, Kinberg’s credits include X-Men: Dark Phoenix and Prime’s series Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Kinberg has been working on the new trilogy since 2018. He previously co-created the DisneyXD animated series Star Wars Rebels, which ran from 2014 to 2018. Additionally, reports indicate Lucasfilm has eyed Daisy Ridley to reprise her role as Rey. The trilogy will serve as the next chapter of the Skywalker Saga. However, the project reportedly has not yet received a greenlight from Lucasfilm’s parent company, Disney. Lucasfilm had no comment.

The Skywalker Saga began in 1977 with the original trilogy’s Episode IV: A New Hope. Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back followed in 1980, and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi arrived in 1983. Next, the prequel trilogy brought Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999) and Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002). Episode III: Revenge of the Sith completed the prequels in 2005.

Most recently, Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015) and Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (2017) continued the Skywalker Saga. Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker closed that trilogy in 2019. Ridley’s Rey led the sequel trilogy across all three films. Since that final chapter, Lucasfilm has expanded the Star Wars franchise with films and streaming series across its onscreen universe. The franchise’s next installment, Star Wars: Starfighter, will premiere on May 28, 2027.
