Sylvester Stallone has revealed how a terrifying jail stint taught him the value of freedom. In his memoir, The Steps, the actor recalls spending a week and a half at New York City’s Manhattan House of Detention in the early 1970s. He describes the facility, known as The Tombs, as “a true house of horrors.”

According to Entertainment Weekly, Stallone’s detention followed a confrontation at a deli where he worked. The experience exposed him to the harsh realities of life behind bars and left him determined not to return.

Why Sylvester Stallone called his time in jail a wake-up call

Stallone’s memoir details the unsettling conditions he encountered after officers took him to The Tombs. He describes the facility as “filthy,” “violent,” and “overcrowded.” The actor recalls being led underground toward the holding cells, writing, “Every step got wetter and darker.” He also remembers the air growing heavier as the sound of inmates echoed through the underground corridors.

The actor’s first holding cell contained at least two dozen inmates in a space measuring approximately 20 feet by 20 feet. With only a single lightbulb illuminating the room, he struggled to make out the faces around him.

Stallone also recalls seeing a frightening act of violence inside the jail. He writes, “I remember one guy was pounding another man’s head into a small hole in the floor that prisoners used as a toilet.” Later, officers moved him to an even smaller cell, where at least 15 men crowded into a space meant for about six. The experience made his time in jail even more terrifying.

After Stallone spent a week and a half in custody, a judge released him. The actor recognizes the experience as a turning point rather than simply an unpleasant episode from his youth. Stallone writes, “The thought of having no freedom ever again was an incentive to keep my nose clean, forever.”

The jail time came years before his breakthrough with Rocky in 1976, which established him as a major Hollywood star. His memoir revisits the difficult period before his rise to fame, highlighting an experience that shaped his outlook on freedom.
