The Department of Public Works and Highways has coordinated with the North Luzon Expressway Corporation and the Quezon City local government unit to construct a floodwater detention basin beneath the Cloverleaf section of NLEX.
According to DPWH secretary Vince Dizon, in a report by the Philippine News Agency, the detention basin will be at least half the size of the one found in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, and is targeted for completion before next year’s rainy season.

The DPWH also said it is in coordination with water concessionaires in the region, such as Manila Water and Maynilad, to help redirect the collected water to treatment plants for possible potable use. “We will be able to help our countrymen with flooding and at the same time, we will still be able to use the water for household use,” said Dizon. “That is why we came here today so that the planning and, eventually, execution can begin.”

Dizon added that the DPWH plans to double the size of inlets in the area to better address flooding, and in turn, decrease traffic congestion during heavy rain. This is similar to the detention-basin expansion plan the secretary mentioned during a visit to Balong Bato Creek along EDSA Balintawak in the same week.
In a separate report by PhilStar.com, Dizon said that the anti-flood interventions along NLEX, which successfully prevented major flooding in Paso de Blas, Valenzuela, are the agency’s model for upcoming flood management and mitigation projects.
