Architect Jun Aoki designed the museum building with deep, earth-carved trenches inspired by the nearby Sannai Maruyama Jomon archaeological site. Nara’s 8.5-meter concrete sculpture is set entirely inside one of these stark, geometric dirt/concrete voids, utilizing the high walls to heavily dictate the viewer's scale and perspective.
