Naughty Dog is set to continue to expand its flagship The Last of Us universe. Marking the studio’s annual TLOU Day, head developer and creative director, Neil Druckmann, disclosed that two mystery titles are in early production, each designed to take the franchise into uncharted narrative territory.
What Neil Druckmann has revealed about the next The Last of Us projectsIn the Naughty Dog blog post, Druckmann offered one major clue that states the projects will move beyond the boundaries established by the first two games. “Both projects will expand the canon of The Last of Us beyond Part I and Part II,” he wrote. That leaves room for speculation, including a possible third mainline game or a separate story in the same world.
The franchise currently centers on two mainline games, while HBO’s television adaptation has expanded it into a two-season series. The show carries an 8.4/10 rating on IMDb. Rotten Tomatoes lists Season 1 at 96% and Season 2 at 92%.
Tommy Miller could still have a future in the TLOU universe. Druckmann previously floated a standalone story centering on Tommy, whose arc writers altered for Season 2, according to Beebom. Still, Naughty Dog has yet to tie either upcoming project to the character or officially announce Part 3.
Whatever comes next, the studio does not want to revisit the franchise just to put another game back on the shelves. Druckmann said The Last of Us “means a great deal” to Naughty Dog and argued that returning would require “something meaningful to say.” Druckmann and his team firmly believe these stories command a narrative.
Before TLOU takes another step forward, Naughty Dog has its hands full with the single-player, sci-fi action-adventure game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. It serves as the studio’s primary focus before fans see what’s next for their other franchises.
