The Last of Us Season 3 is adding some familiar faces to the HBO series. The upcoming season will also feature several new characters as the story continues in 2027.
John Goodman, Ian Alexander, and Laura Bailey join The Last of Us Season 3John Goodman, Ian Alexander, and Laura Bailey have joined The Last of Us Season 3. Goodman will play Joey, while Alexander will portray Paco. The pair are described as a friendly duo who call themselves the “Heroes of the Highway” (via Deadline).
Meanwhile, Laura Bailey will play Elizabeth, one of the leaders of the Seraphites. The religious group is expected to play an important role in the upcoming season. The casting also has a connection to The Last of Us Part II video game.
Ian Alexander previously voiced Lev in the game, while Laura Bailey provided the voice for Abby Anderson. In the HBO series, Lev is played by Kyriana Kratter, while Kaitlyn Dever plays Abby. The Last of Us is based on the Naughty Dog video game. Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann co-created the HBO series.
Season 1, starring Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie, was released in 2023. The story follows Joel as he transports Ellie across a post-apocalyptic United States. Season 2 was released in 2025 and jumped five years forward.
Joel’s story ended during the second season after his character was killed by Abby Anderson, played by Kaitlyn Dever, to avenge her father. However, Pedro Pascal could potentially return through flashbacks. His involvement in Season 3 has not been confirmed at this point.
Season 3 is expected to focus heavily on Abby Anderson’s story. The Seraphites are also expected to have an important role in the upcoming storyline. The upcoming season could also be the final chapter for the HBO series. HBO and Max Content chairman Casey Bloys recently said Craig Mazin appears to have planned Season 3 as the final season.
Mazin is also taking over as the series’ sole showrunner for Season 3. Neil Druckmann will remain involved with the series, but Mazin will lead the upcoming season.
The Last of Us Season 3 is currently scheduled to premiere in 2027.
