The Muppet Show might not be heading in the direction Kermit had alluded to. Despite the special’s numerous Emmy wins and the record-setting viewership, Disney seems to be looking for something different for the show.
As reported by Deadline, despite its strong viewership numbers and 4 Emmy wins, there are currently no plans to develop a regular Muppets show, but not for a lack of trying from those involved.
However, the Emmy wins could definitely get Disney to reconsider its stance or accelerate whatever effort is underway for the show, whichever the case may be at this point, with a series order yet to materialize.
What happened in the recent The Muppet Show Disney+ special?
The 2026 special of The Muppets Show featured Sabrina Carpenter, Seth Rogen, and comedian Maya Rudolph as special guests. Sabrina Carpenter and Seth Rogen also served as Executive Producers on the special. The special followed the cast of The Muppets as they tried to put the show together, with the backstage area being overcrowded and Miss Piggy competing with Carpenter.
The special received many positive reviews, with the Tomatometer on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes currently at 98%. In addition, Deadline reports the show received millions of views. Tough Pigs highlights that it won the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded), Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special, Outstanding Picture Editing for a Variety Special, and Outstanding Production Design for a Variety Special.
It lost the other two categories it was nominated for: Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Variety Series Or Special and Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance. However, there does not seem to be a revival in sight just yet. Disney seems to be taking a cautious approach in the market due to its challenging post-COVID record. As with its strategy for Star Wars and Marvel, it may be waiting to move forward with Jim Henson’s creations before greenlighting new projects.
