I don’t want to be that guy. If I ever shout the words “AI Slop” in a clueless manner i want you to take my life. But lord, this trailer is not good.
It’s for the self-styled retro beat ’em-up Kings Do Not Fall, which has actually been out since April, making this promo an even worse idea. It’s billed as a “retro TV spot parody”, but it only manages to be a parody of anything acceptable.
I’ve watched it three times, trying to decide if it is intentionally this awful, and am coming round to the idea it might be.
I’m not anti-AI, soz pitchfork-wielders, but when the voiceover refers to something as a “retro beat them up” I’m struggling to defend the use of the technology, even for a small indie with no budget.
The thing is, the game actually looks alright, I mean, I’m not going to play it, but graphically, it’s big chunky fighting characters and old-school vibe appeals to me, but the problem is, I saw this trailer before I saw the game.
As I say, it’s been out since April and only has four reviews, the whole thing is just odd, and its a shame, I think, because it has solid arcade vibes, but even if the trailer is supposed to be intentionally bad, I can’t get over it if this is the first thing you see, it is destined for just four reviews eternity.
There’s even an interesting backstory to it all as well, in that it comes from old-school game designers Carlo Perconti and his longtime collaborator and friend Lyes Belaidouni. Carlo worked as a programmer on games such as Legend and Iron Commando on Super Nintendo, Burning Road on Sony PlayStation, and Soulfighter on Sega Dreamcast. I just don’t get it man.
Maybe it’s worked, I mean it’s got me covering it. Anyway, I wish them well as I do with all indie devs, but the trailer man, the trailer.
The post This game looks okay, but the trailer is one of the most God-awful things I’ve seen in years appeared first on The Escapist.
