Fredrick Nwabufo, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Public Engagement, has strongly criticised Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), for his comments regarding an ongoing legal case in a United States court involving Tinubu.
The case concerns requests for the release of records linked to past investigations. Tinubu, who joined the matter as an intervenor, recently urged a US district court to reject activist Aaron Greenspan’s petition for the records, while also supporting the FBI and DEA’s decision to keep certain documents redacted.
Obi, in a statement titled “A President and the Endless Question of His Past”, argued that Tinubu should address lingering questions about his history rather than block the release of documents.
Nwabufo dismissed Obi’s remarks as “ludicrous,” insisting that allegations tied to the US case had already been investigated and dismissed.
Writing on X, he said:“There is no so-called ‘imperfect past’. The issues have been routinely investigated and found to be patently false and libelous… This refrain is a tired and expired one, regurgitated every election cycle from the bowels of a failing opposition.”
He further criticised Obi’s record as governor of Anambra State, accusing him of poor leadership marked by religious divisions, strikes, kidnappings, and decaying infrastructure.
Nwabufo urged politicians to focus on substantive issues that matter to Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections, questioning what Obi could present to voters as justification for his presidential ambition.
