A Toronto man took to social media to lament the city’s dating scene, branding it the “worst” on the planet.

Brandon Kokoski, an entrepreneur with more than 36,000 Instagram followers, broke down why Toronto is such a crummy place to find love.

“Toronto has the worst dating scene on Earth and I can explain that structurally,” he begins in the video, which has been shared by widely on social media.

He goes on to show the math, noting there’s a “six-to-four ratio of women to men” in the downtown core.

While those numbers appear to favour men, it’s not quite that simple, Kokoski says.

“Dating apps put every Toronto woman in front of the same 45 finance guys named Kyle so five per cent of men get 90 per cent of the attention, and everyone else is furniture,” he noted.

But what is arguably worse is the dating culture in the city, according to Kokoski.

“Nobody approaches anyone here. A Toronto man will risk his life jaywalking on Queen Street but will not say hi to a woman in a coffee shop,” he points out.

“So the women are frustrated, the men are invisible and everyone’s texting an ex in Vancouver.”

His simple suggestion: “Toronto, just talk to each other.”

Torontonians’ reaction

The reaction on social media is wild, with many Torontonians wholeheartedly agreeing with his sentiment.

“I gave up trying to find love in this city,” one woman commented. “It sucks because I love this city but … just honestly not finding luck here, everyone is either pretentious or self-serving or living with their parents.”

Another added: “Problem is with [the] Toronto dating scene is, people think the grass is always greener when you got the best or had the best already!”

One woman said that she’s been “the same men on Bumble and Hinge” since last year.

“Welcome to dating apps!!” another pointed out. “It’s the same everywhere… It’s meant to keep you coming back forever.”

However, other users commented that Toronto isn’t any different than other cities.

“It’s the same worldwide my guy,” one person wrote. “Welcome to Earth.”

Are women asking for too much?

Starting up a conversation is easier said than done for many.

“He’s not wrong,” one man commented of Kokoski’s video. “People on the street in Toronto barely make eye contact with anyone and if you say ‘Hi’ to someone, more times than not they look at you like you just assaulted them.”

One user said that women would “get approached more if they were less standoffish,” adding that “most of them have that ‘don’t talk to me’ aura.”

Another man wrote how women seemingly aren’t satisfied with what’s out there.

“If you’re actually working 10-12 hours a day, building a career, paying bills and handling real-life responsibilities, you’re suddenly not what they’re looking for,” he commented.

“Some women in their 40s are still dating like they’re in their 20s — chasing the lifestyle, the attention and the fantasy instead of appreciating the guy who’s actually working hard and building something real,” he continued.

Another guy blamed feminism for that first move never happening, writing: “WOMEN HAVE RUINED MONOGAMY, ROMANCE, DATING, CHIVALRY, AND GOD ONLY KNOWS WHATS NEXT.”

This obviously didn’t sit well with many women and men who questioned his logic.

“Let me get this straight, the belief that men and women should have equal opportunities, equal pay, equal treatment is ruining dating? Equality is the problem?” one woman asked in disbelief before listing all the reasons why it isn’t the problem.

Talking points

Kokoski told the Toronto Sun that the comments section “proved my point better than I could.”

As far as Toronto is concerned, Kokoski has some suggestions on how to get that conversation started — and it’s all about getting straight to the point.

“My advice to men: make the plan and lead. Say ‘I’m taking you to dinner Thursday’ instead of ‘what are you up to.’”

He added: “Women give the guy who actually shows up a real chance. Directness is a competitive advantage in a city where everyone is hedging.”
