The tamaraw is a critically endangered dwarf buffalo that can be found on the island of Mindoro, and nowhere else in the world. Despite its cute and stocky build, the tamaraw is also known for its tough and fierce personality—probably why Toyota borrowed the name for its formidable utility vehicle.
Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) has recently shown its respect for the animal by donating P3,000,000 to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Tamaraw Conservation Program Office and the Mindoro Biodiversity Conservation Foundation. The donation was made through the TMP Foundation, with the signing ceremony coinciding with the 2026 Tamaraw Festival in Calintaan, Occidental Mindoro.

This isn’t the first time TMP has focused its resources on the animal. The recent donation builds on a partnership established with the DENR back in 2024. In 2025, TMP also donated a Tamaraw utility vehicle to support the Tamaraw Conservation Program’s (TCP) field operations in Mindoro, along with P500,000 worth of ‘Bantay Tamaraw’ kits for rangers.

The P3 million donation will support TCP’s key initiatives, including habitat monitoring, scientific research, capacity-building programs for Barangay and Indigenous Peoples volunteers, as well as Communication, Education, and Public Awareness (CEPA) activities. The funds will also enhance the Tamaraw Research and Conservation Center, providing the facilities with research and monitoring equipment for long-term conservation efforts.

So far, the TCP has reported gains in the tamaraw’s population recovery. The 2026 Annual Tamaraw Population Count records 425 tamaraws and counting in Mt. Iglit-Baco Natural Park. This shows steady progress from the 380 recorded in 2025. The DENR says the increase in population can be attributed to sustained conservation efforts, including habitat protection, scientific monitoring, law enforcement, and community participation.
The donation also celebrates TMP’s 38th anniversary, with the company aiming to reach 3,000,000 cumulative vehicle sales later this year. The partnership with DENR underscores the car manufacturer’s broader commitment under the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, specifically ‘Establishing a Society in Harmony with Nature’ through biodiversity conservation and nature-positive initiatives.
TMP says that as conservation efforts continue, it remains committed to supporting initiatives that contribute to the tamaraw’s protection.
