Duke fans still speak fondly of the Miracle Minute win that the Blue Devils pulled off against Maryland in College Park back in January of 2001. Led by Jason Williams, they erased a 10-point lead with under a minute left in regulation before winning 98-96 in overtime. It was an amazing thing to see.
This may top that.
William & Mary was down 32-22 to Villanova, at Villanova, with 0:58 to play – and won.
First, they scored a field goal. Then they got an exceptionally long onsides kick and scored a touchdown with :22 left, tying the game with the PAT.
Then William & Mary intercepted a pass near the 50-yard line with 0:08 left and got to the 28-yard line. And with 0:05 left, they lined up for a 45-yard, game-winning field goal.
Look, it’s not like this is Auburn-Alabama. It’s D-II, but the emotions? They’re every bit as real as anywhere else. Those kids will talk about this for the rest of their lives. They’ll have it framed behind their desks. Their grandchildren will be hearing about this.
What an amazing comeback.
William and Mary was down double digits to No. 7 Villanova with under a minute left to play.
