Every week, the Las Cruces Sun-News will nominate several athletes for its Athlete of the Week award, sponsored by the El Paso Children's Hospital. The winner is decided by you, the readers.

The award highlights the best performances from Las Cruces-area athletes from the previous week. This week, there are eight nominations from football, girls volleyball, boys soccer, and cross country from Las Cruces, Mayfield, Centennial and Organ Mountain high schools.

The poll will close at noon on Friday, Aug. 28. There are no restrictions, so vote now and vote often.

Here are the nominations for this week:

  • Aldo Gallegos leads the Las Cruces High School football team in rushing yards (107) after one week. The junior also recorded 54 passing yards in the Bulldawgs' 14-7 win over Rio Rancho on Friday, Aug. 21.
  • Organ Mountain High School's Romeo Jones scored three touchdowns during the Knights' 46-14 win over Deming on Thursday. He also rushed for 177 yards.
  • Dailen Ramirez had the Hawks' lone touchdown during Centennial High School's 34-7 loss to Cleveland on Friday.
  • Las Cruces volleyball's Ava Price shined during the Bulldawgs' 3-0 sweep over Santa Fe on Friday. She recorded five aces and leads the team in kills per set (4.3) alongside fellow outside hitter Lyza Jackson.
  • Judy Borham was stellar at the net for the Hawks volleyball team as Centennial swept Santa Fe on Saturday. Borham has seven blocks and is averaging three kills per set (18 total) on the season.
  • Centennial's Gavin Strascina leads the boys soccer team with five goals off of nine shots so far this season.
  • Joshua Bernal, with the Mayfield cross country program, led the way with a time of 18:43.26 during the Santa Teresa High Invitational on Saturday.
  • Las Cruces' Brooklyn Pfaender led the way during the Santa Teresa High Invitational on Saturday with a time of 24:12.83.
