Widow’s Bay star Matthew Rhys has revealed when fans can expect from the hit comedy show’s follow-up. Based on his latest comments, viewers may have to wait a little longer for the follow-up to the acclaimed first season.

During an interview with The Direct while promoting Golden Axe, Rhys was asked when Season 2 would begin filming and whether fans could expect it by the end of this year or later. The Emmy-winning actor stated that Widow’s Bay Season 2 will begin filming in late April next year. Consequently, he said the show is now targeting a 2028 premiere.

“Ah, sadly, it’ll be… it’ll be 2028, because we don’t start shooting ’til April of next year,” the 51-year-old said. The Beast in Me star added that the writers had only recently returned to work on the new season. He also acknowledged the long gaps between seasons frustrate streaming audiences. He noted that platforms often evaluate performance before greenlighting next steps, which naturally delays production.

What is the first season of Widow’s Bay about?

Season 1 is set on Widow’s Bay, an island town 40 miles off the New England coast. Rhys plays Mayor Tom Loftis, who is desperate to revive his struggling community. With no Wi-Fi and spotty cell reception, many locals believe the island is cursed.

Tom wants these people to respect him, but they think he is soft and cowardly. He plans to build a better future for his teenage son and turn the island into a tourist spot. His plan works, and eventually tourists arrive. But they soon discover the local secrets hiding beneath the surface.

The show ended with a dramatic revelation that left room for a new season. Katie Dippold created the series and serves as showrunner. Rhys leads the ensemble, which also includes Kate O’Flynn, Kevin Carroll, and Dale Dickey, among others.

The TV-MA-rated show’s first season is available on Apple TV+.
