Delphine LaLaurie was a New Orleans wealthy socialite, whose manor house caught fire in 1834. Police, firefighters and various citizens broke into house to search for anyone that might be trapped; instead they found numerous slaves of LaLaurie’s who had been subjected to various forms of torture and mutilation. Many chained in spiked collars and other devices that kept them from moving or lying down, others had broken or missing limbs or limbs having been reset an unnatural angles. Some had shown extreme malnourishment and all had numerous deep wounds characteristic of extreme beatings and whipping. Despite Louisiana being a pro slavery state (even joining the confederacy 30 years late) the citizens of New Orleans were so horrified and enraged by Delphine’s sadism that a lynch mob quickly formed to hunt her dow. Unfortunately LaLauri managed to escape and flee to France.
