Shai Hope warns against the effects of West Indies pay cuts

The West Indies cricket board recently took drastic measures to deal with their financial crisis, slashing player fees by 25% for international players, cutting down retainers contract duration to seven months for domestic players, and suspending domestic competitions.

This move has raised eyebrows in the cricket fraternity, with the West Indies white-ball captain also among those with a concern. In a conversation with Anjali Doshi in Wisden's latest episode of The Scoop, Hope expressed his reservations on how this could be detrimental to young players coming into the sport.

"The reality is cricket is no longer just recreational; there's a business side aspect to it as well, and you've got to feed your family," said Hope. "And when you're growing up, you put a lot of time and effort, a lot of sacrifices out there, so you still have to reap the rewards in some way."

Hope understands that different players have different motivations to play but at the end of the day, players still need to think about their personal interests.

"And the reality is we're not just playing country to country, it's still a business as well, so you've got to look after your best interests in the long run. So it's a conversation that I think would never stop, especially when you're talking about past generations and generations now. So it's always going to be an interesting conversation," he added.

West Indies' financial troubles have turned countless players away from the national side and towards lucrative franchise T20 leagues. The likes of Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine, and Andre Russell spent most of their careers in the franchise circuit, while Nicholas Pooran's early retirement had also come as a shock.

Moving to the on-field action, Hope continued his remarkable form with an unbeaten 102 off 45 deliveries in response to India's 249 in Ranchi, powering his side to the second highest successful run-chase in T20I history.
